US-led assault in Libya

Denying that Gaddafi was not on the target list, coalition forces enforcing no fly zone launched missile strikes against the Gaddafi regime in Libya's capital Tripoli for the third consecutive night.

Coalition airforces bombed Libya's air defence systems  in which a missile flattened a building housing Muammar Gaddafi's command centre very close
to his private residence in Tripoli.

US-led Western forces have unleashed over 100 Tomahawk cruise missiles on military targets in Tripoli and along the Mediterranean coast in last three days.

For conducting  a strong and successful operation named 'Operation Odyssey Dawn' in Libya,US is considering lot of posibilities .US has conceded  that Arab nations are reluctant to work
under the command and control structure of NATO forces thats why   US Defence Secretary Robert Gates  said that his country expects  to hand over the leadership of the military operations against libyan regime  to France  or Britain . Indicating that several Arab countries are planning to join the military coalition.

Despite continued reports of civilian deaths in northern Libya, a French government spokesman claimed that the French strikes, which are part of Operation Odyssey Dawn to implement UN resolution 1973 for a no-fly zone, had "stopped Gaddafi in the development of massacring civilians."

Libyan crisis got aggravated due to delayed action by the US and west powers not to impose the no-fly-zone over Libya till Gaddafi forces had mercilessly  killed the civilian protesters asking for political reforms and exit of the autocrat who tyrannically declared “a bloodbath of the people” from the upstart of mass movement. Now when Gaddafi forces have recaptured much of territory, no fly zone is  being imposed and even  military intervention is being threatened . International community naturally understands that situation  has been allowed to change to give Gaddafi some negotiating benefits. The Libyan people have been made to suffer .

The rebels admitted that they have no answer to Col Gaddafi's air power, and backed demands for a no-fly zone.
The air strikes by US-led international coalition have succeeded in stopping Gaddafi forces  from advancing to Benghazi, the Libyan town under control of the opposition.

As per US adminstration  officials  there is a very high level of commitment among coalition forces about civilian casualties. General Carter F Ham, Commander of US Africa Command said "Our actions are focused on extending the no-fly zone southward, then westward from Benghazi. With the growing capabilities of the  coalition, I anticipate the no-fly zone will soon extend to Brega, Misurata and then to Tripoli,"

French fighter jets and US and British ships began bombing Libyan military targets Saturday evening.

France  was first in the world to formally recognise the Libya’s rebel National Council . That was followed by British Prime Minister David Cameron joining Sarkozy in calling on European partners to follow.

Libya has been rocked by protests since Feb 14. Protesters are demanding the ouster of Gaddafi, who has ruled the country for about 42 years. According to one estimate, over 6,000 people have died in the clashes.

Tripoli is considered to be Gaddafi's main stronghold . After the  violent clashes between security forces  and Libyan loyalists .Gaddafi forces  regained the  control of  the country from rebels who had taken much of the east of the country as well as some towns closer to Tripoli, in the west.

Energy analysts are monitoring the situation in Libya and the Middle East and assess the impact of oil prices on the economy.Oil rose to a 29-month high in New York on concern that the unrest in Libya will spread to other regional oil producers.

Due to the present turmoil  about  150,000 people,  have fled Libya to neighboring Egypt and Tunisia since Feb. 19, The UN Security Council approved sanctions last week imposing asset freezes and travel bans on Col Gaddafi and his family and aides.
